Our Approach to TMJ Treatment on the Upper East Side
At Lazare Biomimetic Dentistry & Smile Design, we approach TMJ treatment in Upper East Side as a diagnostic challenge first and a treatment challenge second. The right intervention for your jaw begins with a thorough understanding of what's causing your symptoms — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
What to expect from your first visit:
Your evaluation with Dr. Lazare includes a comprehensive review of your symptoms, a detailed clinical examination of jaw movement and muscle function, and — where indicated — advanced imaging and bite analysis to identify structural contributing factors. We listen carefully. We document precisely. We explain everything.
Our TMJ treatment options include:
Custom Occlusal Nightguards Precision-fabricated oral appliances that protect the teeth from grinding and reposition the jaw into a more comfortable, stable relationship overnight. Comfortable, discreet, and highly effective for bruxism-related TMJ dysfunction. Learn more about TMJ nightguards.
Masseter Botox for TMJ Therapeutic Botox injections into the masseter muscle reduce the intensity of clenching and grinding by relaxing the muscle responsible for jaw closure. Results typically emerge within 1–2 weeks and last several months, with many patients experiencing significant, sustained relief.
Infrared Light TMJ Therapy A non-invasive, evidence-supported treatment modality that uses therapeutic infrared wavelengths to reduce joint inflammation, improve circulation, and promote tissue healing deep within the temporomandibular joint. Particularly effective for patients with inflammatory TMJ pain who prefer to avoid pharmaceutical intervention. Discover infrared light TMJ therapy.
Bite Equilibration and Occlusal Adjustment For patients whose TMJ dysfunction is rooted in bite misalignment, selective reshaping of the occlusal surfaces can remove the structural imbalance triggering chronic jaw strain.
Physical Therapy and Home Care Guidance We provide structured guidance on jaw exercises, postural habits, and lifestyle modifications to support in-office treatment — because long-term results require more than just clinical intervention.
Our approach is always minimally invasive first. We exhaust conservative options before considering anything more involved — consistent with our broader biomimetic philosophy of preserving what's naturally yours.

Frequently Asked Questions About TMJ Treatment Upper East Side
What can I do at home to manage TMJ symptoms?
Supportive home care can meaningfully complement your in-office treatment. Practical measures include:
Applying warm compresses to the jaw and temple area to relax muscles
Avoiding hard, chewy, or crunchy foods that place excessive demand on the joint
Being mindful of daytime clenching — many patients clench without awareness
Practicing jaw relaxation exercises as directed by your provider
Addressing sleep position and screen posture to reduce downstream neck and jaw tension

Are oral appliances comfortable to wear?
Custom-fabricated nightguards from our practice are designed specifically for your anatomy using precise impressions and bite registration. Most patients adapt within one to two weeks and report that the appliance quickly becomes a normal, comfortable part of their routine. Off-the-shelf guards from a pharmacy are not equivalent and are not recommended — fit and function are both critical for therapeutic effectiveness.
How long does TMJ treatment take?
Treatment duration depends entirely on the severity and cause of your disorder. Some patients experience meaningful relief within days of receiving a nightguard or Botox injection. Others with more complex structural or inflammatory presentations may follow a treatment plan spanning several months. At your consultation, Dr. Lazare will outline a realistic timeline specific to your diagnosis — not a generic estimate.
Can TMJ go away on its own?
Mild TMJ symptoms occasionally resolve with rest, stress reduction, and simple behavioral adjustments — particularly if they're triggered by a temporary stressor or brief episode of bruxism. However, structural causes such as bite misalignment, arthritis, or significant joint damage are unlikely to self-correct. If your symptoms have persisted for more than a few weeks, are worsening, or are disrupting your sleep or daily function, a professional evaluation is the appropriate next step. Early treatment almost always produces better outcomes than waiting. You can also read more about understanding TMJ symptoms and what they mean.
