General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), recently released an article discussing a study showing that consuming cheese and other dairy products may help protect teeth against cavities. While the benefits of dairy products has been known in relation to bone health, the increase in pH when these foods were consumed is good news for all of us who enjoy our cheese plates.
Nutrition and diet have a tremendous impact on dental health, playing a large role in your mouth’s ability to resist infection and gum disease.Many of the vitamins which our bodies require have specific roles in the health of our oral structures, from supporting healthy gums and strong bones and teeth, to preventing infections and oral cancers. pH is a measure of how acid or alkaline a liquid is. When our saliva maintains a healthy pH we limit the creation of and effectiveness of harmful bacteria, preventing the demineralization of enamel. It is important to enjoy our diets, but be aware of more acidic foods and drinks being consumed, manage their consumption and work to neutralize their impact.
