Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy
Routine prophylactic cleanings are designed to prevent against gingivitis and periodontal disease. However, 75% of our population already has some form of periodontal disease which studies show have been linked to heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, respiratory diseases and low birth weight in babies. How do you know if you are among those individuals? Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss? Do you have pocketing of 4mm or more (your hygienist will let you know)? Are your gums swollen and become red and angry looking ? Are your teeth shifting with dark spaces becoming more noticeable between them?
Are your teeth starting to loosen up ? If the answer is YES to any of these questions, then you do fall within the above mentioned population, and you are a candidate for our soft tissue management program. Our Soft Tissue Management (STM) program is a non-surgical way to treat and prevent the progression of periodontal disease. It consists of periodontal debridement with a piezo ultrasonic scaler, a gentle instrument that removes plaque and tartar below the gum surface.
Scaling and root planing with hand instruments will also be meticulously carried out along with an in-office irrigation treatment with the warmed medicaments: chlorhexidine and fluoride; which are known to aid in the healing process. Included in this STM program is the finest motorized toothbrush in the industry: ROTA-DENT. This toothbrush is only dispensed by dental offices and carries a lifetime guarantee. We will show you how to use it along with customized instruction of other oral hygiene aids. You will also be provided with home medicaments such as " Prevident" (a fluoride paste that protects and desensitizes the teeth) and " Perioguard" (a bacteriostatic mouthrinse which aids in healing after periodontal treatment).
The goal of our Soft Tissue management treatment program is to resolve the signs of inflammation, eliminate bleeding, prevent tartar build-up, reduce pocket depths and regain and maintain periodontal health. This treatment, when combined with proper home care and frequent ReCare visits, helps to prevent or limit the need for seeing the Periodontist and undergoing periodontal surgery.
